15 Years of Heyy Babyy EXCLUSIVE: Milap Zaveri opens up on how Akshay Kumar’s poop scene was shot; says, “Akshay Kumar improvised on the set. He added the lines ‘Matar Panner’ indicating that’s what the baby had”
The family entertainer Heyy Babyy completed 15 years on August 24. It told the story of three naughty men whose life comes on track when someone happens to leave a baby outside their door. Directed by Sajid Khan, the dialogues of the film were written by Milap Zaveri and he also wrote the screenplay. On the film’s 15th anniversary, the writer-director shared some interesting anecdotes about Heyy Babyy exclusively with Bollywood Hungama.
One of the funniest tracks in the film is when Al (Fardeen Khan) pretends to be a botany professor, who likes to talk in pure Hindi. When asked how he managed to come up with shuddh Hindi dialogues, Milap Zaveri replied, “That was a tribute to Chupke Chupke (1975). Fardeen was named Parimal Tripathi after Dharmendra’s character. I bought a Hindi dictionary and did my research on shuddh Hindi words. My Hindi is good but not so proficient. I remember Sajid had laughed when he read Parimal’s dialogue ‘Yeh kukurmuta jhol hai’ and ‘Main mutramugdhi karke aata hoon’! That was a great part to write.”
He added, “Fardeen was so amazing. He would rehearse every day on the set with me. He would go over the lines and I’d help him with the lines.”
The other significant scene in the film is when the poop-laden diaper falls on Akshay Kumar’s face. The scene was unveiled for the first time in the trailer. It was attached with the prints of Partner and the reaction to the scene was mixed. While many found it funny, some were scandalized. This was the pre-Delhi Belly (2011) era and hence, toilet humour of this kind was unheard of.
Was there any debate regarding this scene as well as to whether or not it should be shot? “No,” said Milap Zaveri and continued, “It’s the most natural thing. A baby is going to poop and urinate. If you see, it was a great moment. Riteish slips and the diaper goes flying. You think it’ll land on Fardeen’s face. Akshay is like ‘Jaa jaa’ but it ends on his face. Akshay sir improvised on the set. He added the lines ‘Matar Panner’ indicating that’s what the baby had. He had a blast doing the scene.”
When asked what was the yellow-coloured stuff that was put on Akshay Kumar’s face, Milap Zaveri answered, “I don’t remember but it was a mixture of some food. Art department ne kuch kiya tha. It was obviously not poop!”
