EXCLUSIVE: “Manoj, Anurag, and I couldn’t do better than that in the last 25 years”- Ram Gopal Varma on Satya
Ram Gopal Varma has helmed films like Satya, Company, Darna Mana hai, Sarkar, Rangeela among others. Through the course of his career, he has had flops and hits at the box office. However, none of his recent films have hit a chord with the audience. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Ram Gopal Varma spoke about filmmakers’ understanding of what makes a film good or bad.
RGV is of the opinion that if one knows how to make a good film, there would be no bad films. “No filmmaker can ever make a film thinking it is bad, average, or whatever. He puts his best. I know it will be difficult to believe that I don’t see any difference in the effort I put in Sarkar and Aag or neither in Shiva or Satya or some other flop of mine. The film makes itself, in terms of how good it is. You can make a film, whether it becomes a good or bad film, I don’t think anyone can take credit for that. I mean, bad off course, I take credit for that, good I don’t. The reason for that is for eg, in a movie like Satya, we made it. Me, Manoj, Anurag and all of us. The fact that all three of us couldn’t do better than that in the last 25 years, proves that we can’t take credit for the first film. If I knew how to make a good film, why will I make a good film. Many times I try to explain this but I understand people don’t understand this.”
Meanwhile, on the work front, RGV recently launched his own OTT platform called Spark and the first film to stream on the platform is his latest release D Company. D Company starring Ashwat Kanth, Pranay Dixit, Naina Ganguly, and Irra Mor, is the story of how a street gang in Mumbai headed by Dawood Ibrahim rose to become the world’s most dangerous criminal organization.
